The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office is investigating a fire in Washington County.

A passerby called 911 around 2:45 a.m. Monday after seeing the fire on Caring Pathway Lane in Hagerstown.

The fire was at the site of a 17,000 square foot single-story wood frame building, the planned site for Doey's House.  Doey's House was set to be a 12 room hospice facility.

Nearly 80 firefighters responded to the fire, but winds helped to drive the flames. It took crews three hours to bring the fire under control.

While investigators still do not know what caused the fire, the have placed damage estimates at $3.5 million.

No injuries were reported.
