WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. transportation secretary says safety issues with Washington's subway system need to be resolved quickly and local officials should do whatever is necessary to correct problems.

Anthony Foxx, who met with reporters Tuesday and discussed a wide range of transportation issues, says Metro must have a culture of safety.

Foxx said getting the safety concerns fixed will be a challenge, but said if the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority needs to shut some subway lines down for months, officials should do it.

The entire subway system in the nation's capital was shut down for 29 hours last month for a system-wide inspection after an electrical fire.

Board Chairman Jack Evans said last week that it may be necessary to shut down entire rail lines for months for maintenance work.
