Three children were hurt in a boat explosion and intense fire Saturday morning on Mille Creek.

The children, ages 3, 8, and 9 were airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.  Authorities said two of the children have severe burns.

Natural Resources Police Spokeswoman Candy Thompson said  around 11:30  Saturday morning, two adults and three children launched a 20-foot pleasure boat  from a private pier into Mille Creek near Lusby, Maryland.  One hundred yards from shore the boat exploded and caught fire.

The Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire,  but the gas-fueled flames fire quickly burned the boat to the waterline, according to Thompson.

All three children were burned; the adults were not hurt.

Natural Resources Police are investigating along with the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
