WASHINGTON (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a suspicious package that caused the closure of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge has turned out to be a box of loose wires.

Troopers said on their Twitter account that a brown cardboard box with red wires and duct tape was found in the bridge's southbound lanes in Prince George's County about 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Officials closed the bridge in both directions for a few hours to investigate, with the Prince George's County bomb squad on the scene.

The Washington Post reports that the shutdown created miles-long backups. The bridge crosses the Potomac River between Alexandria, Virginia, and Oxon Hill, Maryland
