Carroll County's State's Attorney Brian DeLeonardo is advocating for the Police Protection Act.

It would prevent court commissioners from releasing anyone charged with first or second-degree assault on a police officer or law enforcement officer that results in injury.

"In that way both the prosecution and the police have a chase to get the information together and make an argument to the judge as to why this person should be released or if they are released, what conditions should be placed on that release," said DeLeonardo.

A senator and a delegate both submitted bills. The Senate bill was heard in Annapolis Wednesday.

The House bill will be heard next month.
