Phone scam threatens citizens with arrest

Posted

A new phone scam threatening arrest is causing concern among citizens.

Residents in Frederick are receiving phone calls from a person fraudulently claiming to be a member of Frederick County law enforcement.

The caller falsely states having an arrest warrant for the victim, that can only be expunged by paying a fine.

In these instances, the caller instructs the recipient to purchase a Green Dot card valued at a certain amount of money. Once obtained, the scammer demands the number on the card and in turn electronically withdrawals all money from the card.

Frederick Police urge anyone receiving such calls to immediately hang up. Officials recommend never divulging any credit information.

Anyone with questions regarding the identity of a law enforcement employee is asked to call 301-600-2102.
