Maryland State Police are investigating a three vehicle collision that left one person seriously injured and closed the road to Assateague Island late Saturday afternoon.

Shortly before 4:30 P.M. Maryland State Police at the Berlin Barrack responded to a reported crash in the 7800 block of Stephen Decatur Highway.

Upon arrival troopers discovered three vehicles involved in a crash. One driver was airlifted to University of Maryland Shock Trauma with serious injuries.

Troopers had to close the roadway so emergency personnel could conduct rescue operations.

Authorities said their preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle may have been traveling southbound in the northbound lane, when it struck the other two vehicles.

The exact cause and contributing factors remain under investigation at this time.
