If you have ever crossed the bay bridge during rush hour or tried to head to Ocean City for the weekend, you know how terrible the traffic can be.

But starting on Tuesday, you can learn about plans to ease congestion on the Bay Bridge and come up with new routes over the bay. The meeting is happening in Prince Frederick in Calvert County, but there are two meetings on the schedule that are a little closer to our area.

One is this Wednesday at Broadneck High School in Arnold, the other is next Wednesday at Middle River Middle School. The Maryland Transportation Authority will have reps on hand at these meetings to talk about the Chesapeake Bay crossing study.

The goal is to find ways to improve mobility on the existing Bay Bridge and the possibility of building a new bridge to get across the bay. The specifics of that plan won't be identified until later this year.

A 2015 study found that the existing bridge can be maintained in safe conditions through 2065, but that there will be significant daily backups by 2040 in the summer months without additional crossing capacity.
