The Maryland Zoo says a baby giraffe’s condition has taken a turn for the worst.

In a statement, the zoo said Julius the giraffe’s condition has gone from “critical to dire.” Overnight Julius did not feed well, then in the morning his health worsened.

Quick action by veterinarians, including inserting a feeding tube, helped Julius remain alive, but the outlook is “dim” according to zoo officials.

Caretakers want Julius' condition to stabilize enough for the giraffe care team to be able to offer him food from the pan from which he’s previously been drinking.
