Maryland police officer allegedly stole paralyzed woman's pain pills

Posted

A Maryland police sergeant has been charged with stealing prescription opioids from a paralyzed woman after she and a friend said they caught him on video giving her $35 to stay quiet.

The Herald-Mail reports that the paralyzed woman noticed her pain pills missing after Sgt. Christopher Barnett questioned her about an unrelated case.

Barnett returned and allegedly asked what he could do "to make this right" after she called Hagerstown Police asking for the name of the officer who stole her medicine.

Barnett said he'd be back in 15 minutes with replacement pills. The woman and a friend secretly recorded his third visit, when he also allegedly gave her $35 in hush money.

Police chief suspended Barnett without pay. He was released from custody on Friday.
