Police arrested a 22-year-old Allegany County man in connection to the death of his newborn daughter Saturday night.
Police charged Kyle Poindexter of Crespatown, Md. with second degree murder, reckless endangerment and first and second degree assault in the death of two-month old Avery Poindexter.
Police said earlier Saturday Poindexter was watching the baby while his girlfriend—the mother of the child—was at work. Investigators learned that Poindexter had asked neighbors for help because the baby had stopped breathing. Neighbors performed CPR while the father called 911.
The baby was taken to Western Maryland Regional Health Center in Cumberland where she was pronounced dead. Medical personnel noticed bruises on her head and face and called police.
Following an autopsy, the medical examiner’s office ruled the baby’s death a homicide.
An investigation led police to identify Poindexter as the suspect. He was arrested Saturday night without incident.
