A hiker needed a helicopter rescue after falling down the side of a cliff in Montgomery County, Monday.

At about 3 p.m., Maryland State Police Aviation Trooper 3, based in Frederick, Md., was sent to Sugarloaf Mountain to aid in a rescue.

The pilot flew an AW-139 helicopter into position above a small outcropping of rocks, lowering a trooper onto the scene to assist the injured hiker and coordinate the rescue. Along with medical personnel who hiked in, the patient was stabilized and packaged for extraction.

Due to the difficulty and remoteness of the location, aerial extraction was required. The trooper accompanied the hiker back up into the aircraft, who was then flown to Meritus Medical Center in Washington County.

The rescue was a coordinated effort by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue Team, Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department, Carroll Manor Fire Department, Urbana Fire Department, Upper Montgomery County Fire Department, and the Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue Team.
