Gov. Larry Hogan said Wednesday he'll push for the repeal of last year's controversial "Road Kill Bill," which canceled transportation projects in jurisdictions all over the state.
Hogan said repealing the bill would be his administration's top priority.
In a press conference Wednesday, Hogan said he will submit emergency legislation to repeal the bill. It was passed and became law over Hogan's veto last year.
"Today I am here to announce that we will submit emergency legislation for our top priority for this legislative session, which is to push for the full and immediate repeal of this disastrous bill which will absolutely be responsible for the elimination of nearly all of the most important transportation priorities in every single jurisdiction all across the state," Hogan said. "It will wreak havoc on the entire state transportation system and usurp important authority away from local governments and away from the executive branch of state government, giving authority instead to lobbyists and special interest groups."
Maryland House Speaker Mike Busch fired back in a statement, saying that “Governor Hogan has overpromised and under-delivered on his transportation budget."
"Nonpartisan analysts reported last month that his promises are $1.6 billion overbudget, so he needs a scapegoat to explain away his inability to deliver," Busch's statement read. "The people of Maryland want a transparent government where they understand how politicians are spending their money. The law requires the Governor to simply explain his spending decisions, not hide behind them.”
The law created a scoring system that ranked transportation projects in terms of priority. Sixty-six projects were canceled.
Those projects were:
