A dirt bike rider is dead after going through a stop sign and striking a pickup truck.

On Sunday the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office received a call shortly before 1 p.m. for a crash in the area of Dockser and Sky View Drive in Mechanicsville's Golden Beach neighborhood.

Deputies learned 24-year-old Benjamin Daniel Warring was illegally operating a Yamaha YZ125 when he failed to adhere to a stop sign and collided with the side of a Nissan truck.

Officials say Warring suddenly stopped breathing while receiving treatment at the scene. He was then transported to University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Prior to the collision, several citizens reportedly observed Warring riding in a reckless manner and utilizing a cell phone, possibly recording himself.

The driver of the Nissan, Vincent Wood, 21, was not injured.
