After firefighters put out a blaze at a Calvert County residence Thursday, the body of a deceased man was found inside, the Office of the State Fire Marshall said Friday.

The fire occurred at a single family house being used as a rental property in the 8900 block of Erie Avenue in North Beach. The building is owned by Reba Childs, but two rental occupants lived there.

The North Beach Volunteer Fire Department responded to the one alarm fire at about 6:05 p.m. with about 45 firefighters, taking about 15 minutes to get the blaze under control. Once the fire was out, personnel discovered the dead man inside.

Investigators did not know if smoke alarms were working at the time. Damage is assessed at about $70,000 to the structure and about $15,000 to the contents of the residence. The fire is thought to have started in the kitchen.

The body of the man was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to consider cause of death. The man's name will be released pending identification and notification of family.

The Calvert County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation's Division is aiding the Fire Marshall in an investigation.
