A three-week-old baby giraffe has been placed in intensive care at a Maryland zoo after a sudden change in its bloodwork.

The calf, Julius, has been struggling since he was born June 15 at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. He received a plasma transfusion from a giraffe in Ohio a few days after he was born. Zoo officials said Julius received another transfusion Sunday with a plasma donation from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The giraffe is receiving round the clock care from a team of veterinarians who are monitoring the results of the procedure. The team is also working with Julius on bottle feeding.

In a statement Sunday, the zoo said "It's been a long day for the team that will continue into the night as Julius is cared for moment by moment."
