980,000+ gallons of sewage overflows at wastewater station

Over 980,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed on Saturday night into Sunday morning due to heavy rainfall in the Fort Washington area.

The overflow happened a couple minutes before 9 p.m. at WSSC’s Broad Creek Wastewater Pumping Station located at 10315 Livingston Road in Fort Washington.

Officials say the station was fully operational, but the heavy rainfall overwhelmed the station's pumping capacity, causing it to overflow. Crews have been clearing debris around the station and signs have been posted warning residents to avoid the area.

It is important to note that WSSC's water and wastewater systems are separate, so the overflow did not affect the drinking water.
