COLUMBIA, Md. — A new park is open, honoring a local hero.

The 'Vivian C. Millie Bailey' Neighborhood Square is in Downtown Columbia.

Bailey is a World War II veteran who hasn't stopped helping others.

Her work in the community includes sending care packages to soldiers and raising money for local students to take field trips.

"I never would have imagined that I would receive such prestigious recognition. I'm happy that I have been able to do the things that I have done, to serve the things that I have done in the community and in the state."

This past Sunday, Bailey celebrated her 102nd birthday by going skydiving.

On Thursday, she was presented with a picture of her accomplishment.

While the park named after her is open, it's not finished yet.

The Howard County Veteran's Monument will be installed in an open space there.
