Rt. 40 in Ellicott City has reopened after a multi-car crash closed the westbound lanes Monday afternoon.
The crash happened at approximately 12:14 p.m. Police said five vehicles were involved in the collision on Baltimore National Pike at Pine Orchard Lane.
Police said a Volkswagen Jetta struck two vehicles on Pine Orchard Lane before continuing into the intersection at Baltimore National Pike against the red signal. The Volkswagen was then struck by a third vehicle traveling eastbound on Baltimore National Pike and then struck a fourth vehicle on Frederick Road.
The driver and sole-occupant of the Volkswagen was transported to Shock Trauma with serious injuries. No other drivers were injured. The investigation is ongoing.
