Zach Lederer struck a pose from his hospital bed and that pose went around the world. It's known as Zaching -- a sign of strength and resilience.

May 1 is officially Zaching Day in Howard County.

Lederer started the phenomenon when he struck a strongman pose when he found out the tumor in his head was cancerous. He passed away in March 2014, and May 1, 2017, would have been his 24th birthday.

"What an amazing man he was," said Liz Bobo, Lederer's grandmother. "What an inspiration he was in the way he lived his life, particularly when he knew he was nearing the end of his life."

Many others were moved by his courage, and that's why Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman declared May 1 Zaching Day.

"Who in the midst of what most, if not, all of us would think would be unbearable, just unbearable to learn that you have brain cancer, Zach reached out and gave this symbol of hope and love and courage to anyone who sees it."
