HOWARD COUNTY, Md. — It's been five years in the making, but a new addition will officially open next week at Howard County General Hospital.

The 50,000 square foot area includes a new emergency room entrance for both pediatric and adult patients. There is also an expanded and improved observation and psychiatric unit to increase hospital efficiency and enhance the patients experience.

The new facility has twice the amount of space as the old one.

"There is actually increased awareness and need for mental health in our community, making sure that we're addressing the needs of Howard County is very important to us and although we hope people don't need these types of services the reality is they do and understanding we want to accommodate as much as we can, that was important to us as well," said Chief Medical Officer at Howard County General Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed.

You can access the new ER entrance on Tuesday and the psychiatric and observation units will move to the new space Wednesday.
