Fire crews battle early morning garage fire in Sykesville, Howard County

SYKESVILLE, Md. — Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services crews battled an early Thursday morning garage fire.

At 1:37 a.m., firefighters, paramedics and mutual aid resources from the Sykesville Freedom District Volunteer Fire Department responded to an reported house fire in the 1400 block of Coventry Meadows Road in Sykesville. On the scene, crews found a fire in an attached garage.

Officials said two residents were asleep inside at the time. They were alarmed by smoke detectors and made a safe evacuation.

One resident was evaluated for mild smoke inhalation, but the resident refused treatment and transport to a local hospital. No firefighters were injured.

Fire officials said the flames quickly extinguished. Crews stayed on the scene to help the Fire Marshal ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Fire investigators from the HCDFRS Office of the Fire Marshal and are working to determine the origin and cause of the blaze. Damage estimates are pending.
