Fatal accident on I-70 after tree falls into roadway

HOWARD COUNTY — Maryland State Police are investigating a crash that killed one person and injured another early Friday morning in Howard County.

Shortly after midnight on Friday, troopers from the Waterloo Barrack responded to the area of eastbound I-70.

According to a preliminary investigation, a man driving a Lincoln MKZ was traveling east on I-70 when he crashed into a large tree that had fallen into the road. As a result of the crash, the Lincoln rotated clockwise before being struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe before both vehicles came to rest.

The driver of the Chevy Tahoe, identified as Mark McCluskey, 51, of Baltimore, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The driver of the Lincoln, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was declared deceased at the scene.

I-70 East was closed for about four hours in the area of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
