Car crash kills one person on I-95 in Laurel

LAUREL, Md. — Howard County Police are investigating a deadly crash that killed a person on I-95 in Laurel on Thursday afternoon.

Police say officers were called for drug activity in a vehicle in the 9100 block of All Saints Road around 2:17 p.m. At the scene officers observed the driver of the suspect vehicle suddenly accelerate and flee from the scene. They then tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove onto northbound I-95 at Route 216.

An investigation revealed that the driver tried to make an illegal u-turn into the southbound lane of I-95 at a high rate of speed when he lost control and was struck by a tractor trailer.

The driver and passenger in the suspect vehicle were taken to the Shock Trauma in critical condition. The driver of the tractor trailer was taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of a third vehicle who was run off the road during the incident was also taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries.

Officials say the driver of the suspect vehicle later died as a result of his injuries.

Police continue to investigate the crash. At this time, I-95 southbound remains closed at Route 32.
