Every county in our community is fighting heroin. In Harford County, education efforts are beginning to pay off.
In 2015, county leaders started a series of town hall meetings, public service campaigns, and started talking to middle school students about heroin use.
Harford County said they're making progress with old teens and people in their 20s, but alarmingly saw more middle school students giving heroin a try. Kids as young as 11 were trying the drug in Harford County.
"I can remember that decision to do the first billboard," said Harford County Executive Barry Glassman. "To get parents to talk to their children about heroin. Some folks think you shouldn't do that, it's not something you publicize or talk about."
But publicizing the issue is starting the conversation.
