Joining other public transportation systems nationwide, the waived fares are part of the 13th Annual National Dump the Pump Day, a campaign sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association to encourage people to use public transit instead of driving.
As gas prices rise, particularly in summer months, the hope is to convince those who might not often use the systems that public transit provides a cheap, convenient travel option. According to the APTA, a two-person household can save more than $9890 a year on average by downsizing to one car.
