Huge donation after Toys for Tots gifts stolen

At the Toys for Tots in Edgewood, workers and volunteers are busy handing out toys to families in need.

But the warehouse isn't as full as it should be.  Over the weekend someone snuck in and swiped up to 50 collectable Hess trucks, and a life-sized Darth Vader action figure.  The goods are worth about $1,000.

"There's a special place for somebody who would steal from kids for Christmas, and we have one for them here at the Harford County Detention Center when we catch them," said Major William Davis with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

While deputies search for the thief, former Congresswoman Helen Bentley got to action.

"I said something has to be done about this."

The 92-year-old tells us she talked to some of her friends, and they stepped up to do something good.

"In a matter of nearly minutes, I was up to $1,000 and we got $200 over today,” Bentley said.  “So I feel very very happy."

A generous gift that takes some pressure off the local distribution center.

"We want all of those youngsters to have a Merry Christmas," said Bentley.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office tells us there were no signs of forced entry at the Toys for Tots warehouse, and they're looking at everyone who may have had access to the building.
