Maryland State Police say a bomb squad robot was called to a Royal Farms in Bel Air to investigate a suspicious package on top of a trash can Wednesday evening just after 7 p.m.

A picture sent out in a release shows it was a box for the Elf on the Shelf toy; it was later determined to contain only empty packaging materials inside.

The store and parking lot located at Route 543 and Route 1 was temporarily evacuated during the investigation as well as traffic in the area was briefly held.

A release did not state why the toy box was considered a suspicious package by the customer who reported it.
