Two new speed cameras were added in Baltimore County this week.

The new cameras are at Catonsville Elementary and Pleasant Plains Elementary. Baltimore County officials say the speed cameras encourage drivers to slow down in school areas where speed tends to be a safety issue.

Baltimore County's speed cameras are operational Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. The cameras are in using during the summer months and other weekdays when schools aren't in session.

During the first 30 days after a camera is activated, drivers exceeding the speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour will receive a warning. After the camera has been in place for 30 days, drivers traveling at least 12 miles per hour over the speed limit will be issued a citation. Tickets generally carry a $40 fine.
