Crews are about to begin working on the new Colgate Elementary School in Baltimore County.
Friday morning, county officials held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the $40-million project.
The new school building will replace the original building that was built in 1924. The current school serves 432 students. The new 88,123-square-foot building will seat 530 students.
"As county executive, there's nothing that's a higher priority for me than education, both investing in our people but also our infrastructure. The schools that we give our children and our families says something about how we value them,” said County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. “We know that good schools lead to good outcomes and higher property value, so this is an investment that we need to make more of across Baltimore County. It’s one that we're committed to doing as often and as much as we can."
The new building is scheduled to open to students for the 2020-2021 school year.
