The city of Baltimore is giving young people their first debit card.
The youth works program will be giving 8300 workers between 18 and 21 easy access to their paycheck with debit cards.
Mayor Catherine Pugh said this is a good alternative to carrying around cash or a check.
“If it's in your hand you'll spend it. I think this gives them the opportunity to save and I think with this kind of counseling, peer to peer counseling from an 18-year-old telling you how you should save your money and what you can do with it will be great,” said Pugh.
If an employee’s card gets lost or stolen, they can cancel the card and not lose their money.
This is all an effort to teach young people about financial responsibility.
