It starts with a ceremonial throwing of the mittens but its not just about who has the best arm. The annual Mitten Tree Campaign is an effort by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works to keep kids in Baltimore warm this winter.
They are collecting mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves that will be distributed to children who need them.
Thursday was the kick-off event and featured music by the Dunbar High School jazz band, the Abbottston Elementary School Choir, the Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training Message of Hope Choir, and the Salvation Army Franklin Square Boys and Girls Club.
Santa also made an appearance.
Donations are being accepted through Wednesday, December 20. You can drop them off in the collection bin at the Abel Wolman Municipal Building at 200 Holliday Street in downtown Baltimore.
