A portion of Light Street in Baltimore will be closed as crews look to remove a tower crane.

The closure is needed as the construction of a new building in the central business district gets closer to being finished.

The closure will be between Baltimore and Redwood Streets beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and will last until about 5:00 a.m. Monday, August 6.

"It affects my drive home and makes it difficult; it's always difficult and of the crossroads are tough," said driver, Jane Sieglein

During the closure, the detour directs drivers heading downtown to head west on Fayette Street, south on Hopkins Place and Sharp Street to Conway Street.

Some other routes to get to South Baltimore from St. Paul Street are:

  • Turn right on Chase Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, left on Pratt Street, right on Light Street
  •  Turn right on Franklin Street, left on Greene Street, left on Pratt Street, right on Light Street

If motorists want to get to I-395, I-95 or I-295 from St. Paul Street, these options can be taken.

  • Turn right onto Chase Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, exit at Russell Street for I-295 OR continue onto I-395
  •  At Centre Street, bear right onto “Upper” St. Paul, turn right onto Franklin Street, left onto Greene Street to Russell Street. Take the ramp to I-95 OR continue straight for I-295.

"It's real ridiculous right now.  It's hot and it's hectic.  There's a lot going on.  I'm trying to get home that's all," said driver, Aaron Long.
