BALTIMORE — Local sanitation workers received a special surprise on Tuesday.

Wheelabrator Baltimore, the Ministers' Conference of Baltimore and Vicinity and local students wanted to recognize them for the essential job they do.

They showed their gratitude to the unsung heroes with free lunch, safety vests, utility tools and personalized thank-you cards.

"If we did not have these people doing what they're doing Baltimore would be in a much difficult place so I appreciate them, I appreciate the dirt job that they sometimes have to do. I appreciate picking up the trash, the cans all of that I appreciate them highly."

Residents and businesses in Baltimore generate more than 1.5 million tons of waste each year.
