BALTIMORE — Today is Columbus Day, but at-least eight states, 10 universities and more than 130 cities are now observing Indigenous Peoples Day as an alternative to the federally recognized holiday.

Johns Hopkins University decided to do something different and colorful honoring the rich heritage of indigenous communities with singing, drummers, dancing and food.

The event was a collaboration between the indigenous students at Hopkins and the University's office of multicultural affairs.

Washington DC also celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day for the first time.
