Holiday Cards Wanted: Hero who ran into burning building to save neighbor still hospitalized

BALTIMORE (WMAR) — A Baltimore man will spend his holidays in the hospital, nearly three months after he rushed into a burning home to save a 77-year-old neighbor.

Now friends are asking supporters of Pierre Gibbons to help in his fight to recovery by sending him holiday cards.

The goal is to fill Pierre's hospital room with cards, to put him in the holiday spirit during his continued long recovery and to spread a little cheer.

Pierre suffered severe burns on September 23, after he became trapped while trying to rescue an elderly woman from her home on N. Rose Street.

Unfortunately, the neighbor passed away from her injuries. Pierre wasn't given much of a chance at survival either. He was in a coma for weeks and finally awoke and is able to talk a little and at one point even walked.

But friends say he still has a ways to go with multiple surgeries needed down the road.

If you're interested in sending a card, Pierre is on the Third Floor Intensive Care Burn Unit at Bayview Hospital Center at 4940 Eastern Avenue in Baltimore, 21224.
