Henrietta Lacks painting unveiled at City Hall

A new portrait of Henrietta Lacks will be unveiled in the Baltimore City Hall Rotunda Thursday.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will speak at the unveiling with Lacks' family present to mark the occasion.

Lacks was a Johns Hopkins Hospital patient whose cells continue to unlock advances in genetic research.

The painting will eventually hang in City Hall's board of estimates room alongside the portraits of other prominent city figures.

The unveiling will run from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1.

 Lacks' life and the history of her cells was documented in the book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.
