The Department of Public Works is warning the public to avoid portions of the Jones Falls due to a sewage overflow following heavy rain Tuesday.
The exact amount of the discharge has not been determined, but is expected to be over 10,000 gallons.
The overflows were found in the 1900 block of Falls Road, near North Avenue and in the 400 block of Preston Street. Both were part of an engineered overflow system designed about 100 years ago to spill into the storm drain system as a relief valve when the sanitary system overflows.
DPW expects to begin construction by early next year on an upgrade to its Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant that would eliminate more than 80 percent of sanitary sewer overflows in the city.
