BALTIMORE — The Harlem Park Recreation Center on North Calhoun Street in West Baltimore reopened on Tuesday.

The center has been restored and renovated to include new lighting, books, games and sporting equipment and an upgraded multipurpose room among other things.

This is the first time the Harlem Park Recreation Center has operated since its closing in 2012.

"With the closing of Harlem Park, that created a desert but now we're seeing an oasis in this desert, so now we stand encouraged because here we have an investment and this investment would not be possible without institutional partners so we can look at the hospitals and universities and we also look at the folks in our community who are partnering to make this a reality," said Councilman John Bullock.

Beginning on Wednesday, there will be pop-up programs at the center. It will operate Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday's and Thursday's from 5 to 9.

Beginning in September, it will be fully operational with youth and adult programs, volunteer opportunities, sports leagues, out-of-school learning, summer camp and more.
