BALTIMORE — The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai is expanding its existing NICU space.

On Wednesday, little construction workers kicked off the renovation project. Complete with their hard hats and foam sledgehammers, four former NICU patients broke ground to begin the yearlong renovation and expansion project.

"They've needed this space since 1981, in order to provide the level of care, state of the art equipment," said Michelle Stansbury, Co-chair for NICU Parent's Council.

The newborn care center will include a family lounge and five rooms for parents to stay overnight. There will also be a new well-baby nursery
