City council voted Thursday to make the YouthWorks Program run year round in honor of one of the program's ambassadors.

18-year-old Davonte Friedman and another 18-year-old were shot and killed last Saturday.

Last year, Friedman presented a plan to the council saying young people need jobs to keep them off the streets and that would help stop crime.

Councilman Zeke Cohen is one of the sponsors of the resolution pushing the YouthWorks to run year-round instead of just in the summer months.

He said Friedman will not die in vain and his legacy will continue through the initiative.

"There’s no more salient time than now for us to move this work forward, to get all of our young people connected with work and opportunity," Cohen told WMAR-2 News.

Cohen said the next steps are to get businesses and non-profits on board to help employ members of YouthWorks.
