Coast Guard closes main access point to Chesapeake Bay

The Coast Guard has closed portions of the Port of Baltimore because of winter weather conditions.

Initially the AP reported that the Port of Baltimore was closed, but an official with the port sent us the following statement,

The Coast Guard did close off the main access point into the Chesapeake Bay which is down in Cape Henry, Virginia.  That region is getting more weather.  But that doesn’t mean the Port of Baltimore is closed.  We are actively working ships already here and our marine terminals are operating business as usual.   Truckers are entering our terminals as normal.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, no ships can enter the Chesapeake Bay from 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday morning.

On Thursday, Truckers will be allowed to pick up deliveries from ships that met the deadline and to do other business.

No cruise ships are scheduled to leave from the port of Baltimore until Sunday.
