Fire Prevention Week is here.

Wednesday city and fire officials gathered at Gilmor Elementary School to officially kickoff the week.

This year's theme is Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere. It works to educate residents about the three basic, but essential, steps to take to reduce the chance of having a fire and how to escape safely in the event of one.

"We want you to learn more than one way to get out of a room, more than one way to get out of the house, and we want you and your family to learn that they need a point to get together to make sure everybody is okay, and everybody is safe, " said Baltimore City Fire Department Chief Niles Ford.

Fire prevention week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago fire that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

In Baltimore, Fire Prevention Week starts Sunday, October 7 and ends on Saturday, October 13.
