Camp Hippodrome provides free theater lessons

Posted

Camp Hippodrome is a free, fun experience that teaches students theater skills at the Hippodrome Theatre. It's first come first serve, and they don't require auditions.

This camp, put on by Hippodrome Foundation Inc., is open to everyone. Its popularity has soared; all the sessions are completely full for the summer. More than 400 kids will get to take part in the valuable lessons.

"It's really about getting out of the box," said Becky Mossing, a co-director of Camp Hippodrome. "If we can get them to do something that they haven't been comfortable doing, that's a life skill."

A typical day consists of choreography lessons, vocal practice, improv games and monologue recitation. The kids love it because it's fun, it's stimulating and they can be themselves.

"There's no judging," said camper Nicolas Oke, 12. "They say that you can do whatever, whatever comes to your mind. Especially when we play improv games and they say nobody's going to judge you, and I feel that that statement, it has been very true here."

The professional theater camp accepts Baltimore middle schoolers. It has been offering free programs since 2005.
