Businesses affected by last spring’s unrest have received around $650,000 from the state to upgrade their storefronts, the state Department of Housing and Community Development said.

The Maryland Business Recovery Storefront Improvement Grant Program is meant to help business districts become more attractive places to shop and visit, department secretary Kenneth C. Holt said in a news release.

The program received 145 applications, and 26 of the highest priority projects were chosen for award. That will result in exterior upgrades to almost 50 businesses.

Seventy-three percent of these buildings were in areas damaged during the riots, the department said. Each storefront will receive up to $10,000 in improvements.

Businesses include pharmacies, community centers and convenience stores.
