Black Eyed Susan a day for the ladies

Before the second jewel of the Triple Crown sounds off, the ladies had their turn in the spotlight Friday.

Black Eyed Susan Day at the Pimlico Race Course was a day to soak in the fun and mud.

“We’re here for a bachelorette party our best friend Michelle is getting married to her future husband,” a group of ladies said as the wind blew off one of their hats.

The wind and rain did it's best to steal the show.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been here with this much rain before,” said 13-year-old Samantha Ellis.

As Charles Stewart, who's been coming for 8 years, pointed out.

 “The horses still run.”

The queen filly of the day Red Ruby who dominated the field in the slop to win the $250,000 feature race of the day.

 “We are so proud we are so proud,” said the horse's owner Brandi Nicholson.

Nicholson was adorned with Maryland’s State flower as a prize for winning the race.

“I don’t know if they’ll let me take this on the plane,” she said.

It's not a day at the track without the fancy hats.

 “Black and white. Kind of did something a little different for the royal wedding. It was so wet I couldn’t wear my fancy hat so I made this morning.  I glued my Black Eyed Susans to my head,” said a group of women rocking their race day hats.

Samantha Hohferr was proudly showing off her hat that she bought from Hats in the Belfry in Fells Point.

 “As a new mom of a nine-month-old I can tell you I have no occasion to wear a hat like this except black Eyed Susan Day,” Hohferr said.

Brenton Williamson was a big winner bringing in $600, money he already has a plan for.

“I’ll probably bet it tomorrow,” Williamson said.

On Saturday a chance to keep the shot at history alive for the unbeaten winner of the Kentucky Derby Justify.
