School CEO's letter irks ACLU, student groups

Posted

A lot of eyes are on the eventual verdict of the William Porter trial, including administrators at several school districts, most notably, Baltimore City Schools CEO Gregory Thornton.

Thornton sent a letter home with students last night talking about the precautions the district is taking as they watch the trial.

It was students from Frederick Douglass High School in April who initiated a walkout on the day of Freddie Gray's funeral. That was before rioting broke out near the Mondawmin Mall.

Thornton in the letter says "walkouts, vandalism, civil disorder and any form of violence are unacceptable," and "students who participate in such behaviors will face consequences."

That last part that has been rebuked by the Maryland ACLU and leaders of student protest groups.
