A report in USA Today identifies Baltimore as the most dangerous city in the country.
This comes after they analyzed crime data from the nation's largest 50 cities. The distinction of 'most dangerous city' in the nation is not based solely on the actual number of murders, but when you compare that number to the population size of a city.
So when you look at Chicago, they had 650 murders last year, nearly doubled what Baltimore had, which was 342. But compared to Chicago's population, their murder rate came out to 24 murders for every 100,000 people.
In Baltimore, the homicide rate is 56 murders per 100,000.
USA Today created this list based off of FBI crime data, and the agency will release its own report on the data later this year.
On Tuesday, Mayor Catherine Pugh, along with police Commissioner-Designate Darryl De Sousa, are going to hold a joint news conference to address the report.
As a nation, the numbers show a slight dip in the murder rate. Last year it was around 5,700 murders across the country, compared to around 5,800 in 2016.
