Baltimore bike lanes delayed again over fire code

Posted

Bad news for bikers in Baltimore...

New bike lanes won't be coming to Charm City for another few months. Riders are upset after a ruling at the Board of Estimates to push the already overdue project back nearly a year.

The lanes are supposed to stretch from Charles Village to the Inner Harbor, and Mount Vernon to Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Right now in many places, they're fragmented which is irritating bikers that are already frustrated with the massively delayed project. The network was originally set to be completed June of last year, now it looks like riders won't see complete lanes until this October.

The issue... fire codes.

Fire engines need 20 feet of street clearance to fight fires, and neighbors in Canton used it to fight the growing bike lanes and parking problems.

The project is billed at $2.8 million.
