EDGEWATER, Md. — A woman suffered life-threatening injuries when the car she was a passenger in lost control and struck a tree in Edgewater.

Anne Arundel County Police responded to a crash on Central Avenue East at Loch Haven Road at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police said a 2010 Nissan Maxima heading east on Central Avenue lost control while driving through the curved part of the road. The Nissan crossed over the opposite lane of traffic, left the road, and struck a tree.

The passenger, a 22-year-old woman, was taken by a State Police helicopter to a local trauma center to treat her life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver, 23-year-old Frederick Arthur Stevens Jr., of Edgewater, was uninjured.

Preliminarily, police believe the crash was caused by the driver failing to remain in his lane, but speed and alcohol “appear to have contributed to this crash,” police said. The accident is under investigation, and the findings will be turned over to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review and potential charges.
